With this unique hike tour you will have the opportunity to visit many historical sites located in the surroundings of San Gimignano, also known as the “Manhattan of Tuscany” for its characteristic tall towers. Following a path immersed in the countryside and in the tranquil charming atmosphere of Tuscan hills, you will visit the most hidden and least-known attractions of Tuscany.
 
The tour goes around the so-called area of Poggio alla Città (Poggio town), situated immediately north-west of San Gimignano, whose name recalls the existence of a pre-Roman settlement. Led by our expert guide, you will explore this site, looking for the numerous Etruscan tombs, hidden in the forest and at the edge of fields and olive groves: inside those tombs, archeologist has found pottery, bronzes and urns dating back to ancient times.
 
You will continue your walk on the western side of the area, dominated by the massive bulk of the nearby Poggio del Comune, a mount that provided the cavernous limestone useful in the construction of the famous towers of San Gimignano. From here, the trail continues on the east side towards the medieval village of Collemucioli, touched by the main route of the Via Francigena.
 
This hike tour in the surroundings of San Gimignano will end at the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in the town of Cèllole, a true jewel of Romanesque architecture, which already existed before the 11th century.
